Thanksgiving in America—Some Thoughts

ree

I just finished watching Ken Burns's 12-hour marathon retelling of the American Revolution. Like all struggles for freedom, this six-part presentation showed just how long and brutal that conflict could possibly be. Thousands of people were maimed or killed, and many more uprooted or exiled. It was a long and tough struggle that scarred a generation as our new country was being born.

Life was certainly different in North America after this struggle, and its history as taught in American public schools has glossed over many of the details of this momentous war. Burns's account is a sobering reminder to me that everything, even freedom, has a price. And even with his account, the full story is never quite fully told. We as a country have made much progress with individual human freedom, but we still have a long way to go.

Thanksgiving is an American harvest celebration that brings people together to reflect on who we are as a nation. I celebrate Thanksgiving with friends and family, with those I love and those I do not, folks I agree with and folks that I disagree with, all done over a dinner that gives thanks to just how far this country, with all its warts and wounds, has still managed to make progress toward becoming that "shining city on a hill." I remain positive, and I treat every fellow celebrant with respect and love.

I hope that each of you, fellow readers, has a chance to give thanks as well for 2025 as we look forward to 2026 and the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. Peace to all...and don't forget to read a book!
